[Class 87 (ii).] Apparatus for cutting tubes into lengths, of the kind in which the cutters travel at the speed of the moving work during the cut, is arranged so that the cutter-holding means moves in a path strictly parallel to the axis of the tube. As applied to the cutting up of rubber tubing for the manufacture of hollow articles such as balls, a tube 15 of unvulcanised rubber issuing from an extrusion machine is cut into lengths by reciprocating cutters and the lengths preferably are divided again by being cut at the centre and also closed and sealed by two semi-circular pressing and cutting dies, thus forming blanks for the manufacture of rubber balls. Usually the two cutting-frames 86, 88, which slide on the three guides 10-12, are connected together adjustably so that both are reciprocated from the cam 52 through the linkage 50, 46 connected to the trunnions 47. A second cam 54 moves an inner ring 28 angularly relatively to the frame 86 through the linkage 35, 34, 38, the last link 38 having balljoints at each end to permit the sliding movement of the frame. This movement of the ring in one direction moves the cutters 24 radially inwards through the cam slots 22 acting on the cutter-pins 32. A third cam 80 moves the cutters 66 on the guides 63 through the medium of the lever 84 and mutilated tcothed gear 86, 76, 71, 73, 68. The speed of the sliding movement of the frames is increased at the point where the cutters 24 are finishing their cutting movement, so that it is momentarily greater than the feed of the tube, thus allowing the cut portion to be severed completely from the bulk. To remove the waste portions cut away by the cutting dies 66, spring plungers 91, Fig. 7, fitting between the dies are depressed during the cutting and stamping operation and remove the waste portions on being released.
