Abstract

Amines of the benzene series are obtained by heating a halogenated benzene with aqueous ammonia in an autoclave in the presence of an inorganic oxidant, e.g. an alkali metal chlorate, perborate, perchlorate or dichromate. A metal or compound of a metal, including and subsequent to copper in the electromotive force series, may be present as a catalyst. The preferred oxidant is a chlorate and particularly a mixture of a chlorate and a nitrate; copper, copper nitrate, cuprous oxide and silver chloride are mentioned as catalysts. The starting material may contain a non-reactive group, e.g. a nitro, alkyl, acyl or carboxyl group. According to the examples, (1) aniline is obtained by heating chlorobenzene with aqueous ammonia in presence of potassium chlorate, ammonium nitrate and reduced copper; (2) p-phenylenediamine and p-nitroaniline are similarly obtained from p-dichlorobenzene and p-nitrochlorobenzene respectively.
