Abstract
401,365. Hypodermic syringes. CAMPKIN, H. T., 49, Bedford Square, London. May 13, 1932, No. 13850. [Class 81 (ii).] Means for the operation of hypodermic syringes from a dental engine or other motor comprise screw and nut mechanism so constructed and arranged that at or near the end of the forward stroke of the piston or plunger of the syringe the mechanism runs freely to prevent jamming. An adaptor 2, Fig. 1, is screwed on the syringe body 3 and has a flange 2b for securing the glass phial 4. A casing 1 screws into the adaptor and is formed with or receives a nut 5 having a fine screw-thread, while at its other end it receives a slidable sleeve 6 secured against rotation by a key and keyway 1b, 6b. The sleeve carries a connector 7 which engages the outer casing of the drive from the dental engine. A spindle 8 extends through the sleeve, being fitted with a collar 8a, and a spiked cap 7b for engaging the drive. A threaded portion 8c co-operates with the nut 5, the length being such that for a full stroke of the piston it passes completely through the nut, unthreaded portions 8d being provided at each end. The coned end of the spindle engages a seating in a plug 9 secured to the piston 3a, and carries a pin 8e and nut 9b for securing it to said plug. The syringe is filled by reversing the engine and the forward speed of the piston is regulated by the controlling switch of said engine. If desired, the casing 1 may carry the connector 7, the spindle being driven through telescopic members, keyed or splined together. In a modification, Fig. 2, a casing 10 accommodates a reduction gear and receives the adaptor 11 which is flanged at 11b to form a bearing for the nut 5. The gearing comprises a gear wheel 12, mounted on the nut 5 and meshing with a pinion 14 on a spindle 13 carried by the usual spiked connector 7b. The threaded spindle 8 extends into a guide tube 15 and is held against rotation by a transverse pin 8f engaging slots 15a in said tube. According to the Provisional Specification, the reduction gear may consist of a worm and worm wheel.
