Abstract

400,758. Speedometers. TAPLEY, W., Washington House, Redbridge, Southampton. Sept. 12, 1932, No. 25306. [Class 106 (iii).] In an accelerometer, decelerometer, or like instrument in which the operating-member is an oscillating unbalanced-weight device, such as a pendulum, and in which damping is effected by immersing an oscillating operating-part in fluid, the fluid passage or passages through or round the operating-part is controlled by a bimetallic device to compensate for variations in the viscosity of the damping-fluid owing to variations in temperature. In one form, the oscillating operating-part consists of two bimetallic forks A, B, Fig. 2, with the prongs of one opposite the gaps between the prongs of the other. In a second form particularly applicable to instruments such as is described in Specification 228,475, [Class 97 (ii), Surveying &c. instruments], in which a magnetic pendulum in a sealed damping-box operates indicating-mechanism through magnetic attraction, a bimetallic device F, Fig. 3, shaped as shown is adjustably mounted by means of an adjusting-screw I in a cap H on the top of the damping-box and the lever part of the device moves downward as the temperature increases towards the top of the damping-box and the top of the pendulum D thereby blocking the passage of fluid from one side to the other.
