Abstract

<PICT:0399978/III/1> <PICT:0399978/III/2> In fire-damp &c. detectors of the kind comprising two electrically heated filaments of which one is sealed and the other exposed to the atmosphere, the two filaments are arranged so that they illuminate respectively adjacent portions of a screen of opal glass or the like. Quantitative estimations can be made by observing one-half of the screen through a viewing screen having sectors of varying depth of neutral tint. The device is preferably incorporated in a miner's lamp of the usual type, a switch being provided to place either the lighting bulb or the detecting device in circuit. Figs. 7, 8 illustrate such a lamp in which the lighting bulb A occupies one sector of the casing while the other two sectors contain the sealed and exposed filaments D, C respectively. Perforations B<8> and gauze B<9> permit the access of the atmosphere. The opal glass screen E is bisected by the partition B<7>. An adjustable reflector K serves to calibrate the instrument. In another modification the partition B<7> has two concave surfaces which reflect the light of the filaments on to the screen. In a third modification the filaments are contained in a vertically divided cylinder which takes the place of one of the usual pillars supporting the top of the lamp. The screen constitutes the upper end of this cylinder.
