Abstract

399,922. Transfers. ALLEN, L. and JOHNSON, MATTHEY, & CO., Ltd., Sneyd Colour Works, Burslem, Staffordshire. May 27, 1932, No. 15125. [Class 100 (ii).] Transfers for use in the decoration of glass, porcelain, pottery, enamelled ware, or the like are prepared by printing the design in one or more colours on paper coated with a film of plastic material containing a vitreous flux. The plastic material is such that it burns away on firing, and may be composed of collodion, cellulose acetate, resins; varnishes, or the like. A coloured or colourless flux, which fuses at a relatively low temperature and which is preferably finely divided, is mixed with a solution of the plastic material, and the suspension is applied in a thin film to a gummed sheet of backing-paper ; if desired a pigment, to produce a coloured, clouded, opaque, or translucent effect as a background to the design, may be added to the plastic material. The design is then printed in one or more colours on the plastic film, and, after drying, the backing is removed by soaking with water and the film is applied, printed side upwards, to the article to be decorated, which is subsequently fired. In order to prevent running of the colour into the flux, colours having a higher softening- point than the flux are preferably employed, although more fusible colours may be used if there is no tendency to diffuse. The printing- colour need contain no flux, since flux is incorporated in the plastic film. The colouring- matter may be prepared by fusing a mixture of pigment and flux, grinding the product to powder, and removing the finest particles to leave a granular material which readily adheres in a smooth coating to the vehicle of the printing-composition.
