Abstract

Amines are prepared by treating an aliphatic alcohol with ammonia or a primary or secondary amine in the presence of a catalyst containing phosphorus. The reaction is preferably effected in the vapour phase at a temperature between 250 and 500 DEG C. The preferred catalysts are the oxygenated acids of phosphorus or their anhydrides, polymers or salts; specified catalysts are ortho-, meta- and pyrophosphoric acids, phosphorus pentoxide, di- and tri-metaphosphoric acids, primary, secondary and normal ammonium phosphates, ammonium metaphosphate, normal and secondary ammonium pyrophosphates, aluminium phosphate and aluminium acid phosphate. The catalyst may be deposited on or mixed with other materials, in which connection mention is made of pumice, silica gel, diatomaceous earth, quartz, filter stone, earthenware, carbon, asbestos, slag, cements, sand, metals, metal oxides and salts. Examples are given of the manufacture of amines from the following components: (1) methanol and ammonia; (2) methanol and aniline; (3) methanol and monomethylamine; (4) ethanol and ammonia; (5) butyl alcohol and ammonia; (6) methanol and dimethylamine; (7) propyl alcohol and ammonia. Reference is made to the manufacture of mixed amines from mixtures of alcohols, and to prior proposals to use, as catalysts for the reaction, alumina, thoria, titania, zirconia, chromic oxide, and the blue oxides of tungsten and molybdenum.
