Abstract

In the manufacture of maleic anhydride by the partial oxidation of benzene, there is used a catalyst consisting of or containing 1 part MoO3, 1.5-8 parts V2O5, 0.1-0.01 part P2O5, 0.1-0.01 part Na and 0.1-0001 part Ni. The catalyst is prepared by contacting a catalyst support with a hydrochloric acid solution of precursors and simultaneously agitating the whole, followed by evaporation to dryness at 85-95 DEG C. for 4-7 hours. An example describes the manufacture of maleic anhydride using a vertical reactor tube down which a benzene/air mixture is fed. Specification 853,849 is referred to.ALSO:A catalytic composition containing 1 part MoO3, 1,5-8 parts V2O5, 0,01-0,1 part P2O5, 0,01-0,1 part Na and 0,0001-0,1 part Ni is made by contacting a catalyst support with an impregnating solution, consisting of hydrochloric acid-soluble compounds of vanadium and molybdenum, e.g. metavanadates and molybdates such as ammonium molybdate and metavanadate, and water-soluble compounds of nickel, sodium and phosphorus, e.g. sodium phosphate and nickel nitrate, and simultaneously agitating the catalyst support and impregnating solution and evaporating the solution to dryness at a temperature of from 85-95 DEG C. for from 4-7 hours. Subsequently the catalytic composition may be actuated by heating up to 175 DEG C. for 1 hour at an air flow of 60 litres/hour, 175-320 DEG C. for 1/2 hour at an air flow rate of 0 litres/hour, 320-400 DEG C. for 1/2 hour at an air flow rate of 60 litres/hour and 400 DEG C. for 5 hours at an air flow rate of 60 litres/hour. Specified catalyst supports are alumina, magnesia, zirconia, mullite and beryllia. The catalyst support may consist of a refractory support in particulate form of about 0,2-0,5 inch average diameter and having a surface area of 10 sq. metres/gm. The support particles may receive a preliminary acid wash using for example HCl, HNO3, H2SO4, H3PO4, CH3COOH, CCl3COOH, (COOH)2, C6H5COOH or (CH.COOH)2. The catalytic composition may be used to synthesize maleic acid from benzene (see Division B2). An example is given. Specification 853,849 is referred to.
