Abstract

<PICT:0399014/III/1> <PICT:0399014/III/2> <PICT:0399014/III/3> An apparatus for emulsifying liquids comprises a base 1, Fig. 1, having pivoted thereto at 6 a cylinder 2 normally disposed at 45 DEG and containing a piston 3 connected at 7 to a hand lever 4 so disposed as to produce a toggle action at the end of the pressure stroke. A container 5 for liquid to be emulsified is screwed into a nipple 9 on the cylinder so disposed that the container is normally vertical. A perforated plate 11, having lugs engaging notches in the upper part of the container, hangs freely therein and maintains the contents in admixture when the container is rocked during the emulsifying operation. Liquid drawn into the cylinder through a passage 10, Fig. 3, in the nipple 9 is pressed by the piston past a conical plug 13 in a conical cylinder outlet 12 and is delivered through a chamber 14 and a side passage 2a. Leakage past the piston is retained by an annular groove 2b. The plug 13 may be provided with annular projections or recesses, and also if desired with helical grooves or ribs which produce rotation of the plug. The end of the cylinder is closed by a screw plug 15 carrying a screw 16 forming a stop for the plug 13 which is adjustable to regulate the emulsifying aperture. In a modification the cylinder has a cylindrical end 17, Fig. 5, formed internally with a multiple screw thread engaged by a correspondingly threaded plug 18, the edges of the threads of which are removed to form fine helical passages. The length of the passages may be adjusted by rotating the plug 18 which may be held in any desired position by a spring detent on the cylinder engageable with numbered grooves in the plug head.
