Abstract

398,853. Valve modulating circuits. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London, and DITCHAM, W. T., Tudor House, Broomfield Road, Chelmsford, Essex. March 22, 1932, No. 8526. [Class 40 (v).] To increase the efficiency of a modulating system suitable for broadcasting, signal voltages above carrier-level are handled by one amplifierchannel, whilst those below carrier-level are passed through a second and independent amplifier-channel in parallel with the first. As shown in Fig. 1, a master-oscillator 1 feeds a low-power H.F. amplifier 2 which is modulated from a source 2a. The output is coupled to two high-powered amplifier-channels 3, 4 connected in parallel to the aerial 7, but separated by a decoupling device 6. The amplifier 3 is so biased that at normal carrierlevel it is " quiescent," i.e. its output is substantially nil. The amplifier 4 is fitted with a voltage-limiter 5 so that its effective output is prevented from rising above carrier-level irrespective of fluctuations in the input from the modulator 2. During a positive half-cycle of modulation, the amplifier 3 increases its output to the aerial, whilst on the negative half-cycle the transfer of energy through the amplifier 4 drops by a corresponding amount. In an alternative arrangement, series modulation is effected in each of the amplifiers 3, 4 by separate valves, one arranged to be effective on positive and the other on negative halfcycles of modulation. Specification 262,076, [Class 40 (v), Wireless signalling &c.], is referred
