Abstract

398,669. Table cutlery. CLARK, E. D. W., 56, Penistone Road, Sheffield. Nov. 1, 1932, No. 30725. [Classes 30 and 128.] Knives, forks, and spoons made from blanks, Fig. 3, cut out from sheet, strip, or forged metal, such as stainless steel, are twisted through 180‹ at the junction 11 of the integral blade 10 and handle or tang 12 to form a short helical flute 13, Fig. 1, which serves as a bolster and may be further strengthened by longitudinal corrugations which may extend beyond the bolster part and are formed prior to the twisting operation. To provide a convenient finger recess, the hand of the helix corresponds to the hand in which the implement is to be used. The blank may be under tension during twisting to reduce the shortening effect of the twist. The bolster part 11, Fig. 3, may have taper or parallel edges and scale or whittle tangs may be used. Fork blanks are of uniform thickness, but knife blanks preferably have thicker handle portions. Knives, which may be single or double-edged, are hardened and ground after twisting, the prongs of forks being cut out before twisting. According to the Provisional Specification the angle of twist may be greater or less than 180‹.
