Abstract

398,395. Rotary engines. SCHNURLE, A., 91, Moltkestrasse, Cannstatt, Stuttgart, Germany. Jan. 30, 1933, No. 2907. Convention date, Feb. 5, 1932. [Class 110 (ii).] An engine or blower comprises two inclined shafts a, b, Fig. 3, each provided with a pair of pins a2, b<2> at right angles to each shaft to form a cardan joint, and a disc c<2> which rotates and reciprocates during the revolving of the shafts. Two working chambers f<5>, f<6> are provided communicating with inlet and outlet ports in the casing walls. The two chambers may be connected for balancing purposes. A rotary valve a<3> controls the outlet ports. Each shaft has a part-spherical collar a<1>, c<5> attached. The disc may vary in shape and the casing walls need not be parallel. A small clearance space f<3> is left to take up foreign bodies or to allow for inaccuracies in manufacture. Fig. 3 shows a modified arrangement in which the working strokes of one side of the disc are displaced by 90‹ relative to those on the other side. This is secured by arranging the left-hand side c<1> of the disc along the pins a<2>, and the right-hand side along the corresponding pins b2. Recesses are arranged in the disc at the end of the pins a<2>, b<2>. In this arrangement the two inlets and two outlets of the former engine are merged into one inlet and one outlet. In Fig. 6 two shafts b<3>, b<4> are in alignment and the disc is supported on a hollow shaft in bearings i<1>, i<2>. In a further arrangement, the engine shown in Fig. 6 is modified by having the casing walls inclining towards one another Roller bearings may be used. Sealing strips car be arranged laterally on the disc, and spring rings on its circumference. The disc may be formed of an inner ring of great strength, and an outer ring composed of lighter material Lubrication may be effected through holes ir the shaft, and by rotating rings on the shaft.
