Abstract
In the manufacture of synthetic resins by condensing aldehydes with other compounds such as urea or phenol, in the presence or absence of an acid, basic or neutral catalyst, the reaction product is fractionated by treatment with water into portions having different affinities for water, and the separated fractions are compounded in any desired proportions to produce the final product. In the preferred procedure, an experimental determination is made of the minimum amount of distilled water which must be added to the hot reaction mixture to effect separation into two layers when the mixture is cooled to 15 DEG C. After adding that amount of water and cooling the mixture, the lower layer comprising the highest condensation products only is separated, and the aqueous upper layer is further diluted. Further separation then occurs, with the precipitation of middle condensation products. The aqueous residue comprises the lowest condensation products, together with unchanged starting material and condensing agent. An example is given in which urea and formaldehyde are condensed in known manner and the reaction mixture is treated as described above; by compounding the fractions in specified proportions a product of improved properties is obtained. An example is given also in which phenol and formaldehyde are condensed in the presence of soda, the reaction mixture is treated as described above, and the highest and middle condensation products are mixed together, the aqueous residue being rejected.
