397,545. Ink-ribbon mechanism. BURROUGHS ADDING MACHINE CO., 2nd Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Racz, E. ; 3709, Richton Street, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) Feb. 26, 1932, No. 5768. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1931. [Class 100 (iv).] In duplicating-arrangements comprising a number of ribbons carried by a pair of spools, means is provided for equalizing the tension on the ribbons, and thereby preventing formation of slack, during the winding movement. Means may also be provided for equalizing the unwound lengths of ribbon, and thereby taking up excessive slack, when the ribbons have been wound off either spool, the ribbons being connected together for movement relatively to this equalizing-means. In the arrangement shown in the Figure, an endless ribbon having the plies 22, 23 guided along the printing line is carried by spools 20, 21 provided with feed and reversal mechanism. The loops of the ribbon pass through openings in the spool-cores 51 and engage the spool-shafts 50. The means for equalizing tension during the winding movement consist of large studs 40 which are carried by pivoted arms 41 and are arranged between the plies. When the tensions are equal, the plies are equally diverted by the studs, but if either ply becomes slack, the other ply displaces the studs and the slack is taken up. If excessive slack forms, it is taken up by the pull of the ribbon when the ribbon has been wound off either spool, one of the loops running over the shaft of the empty spool.
