Abstract

[Cognate Application, 299/12.] Ink-ribbon mechanism.-In multicolour arrangements wherein a separate ribbon is provided for each colour, the ribbons pass through a single vibrator and the spool-driving devices are adapted to permit of independent unwinding of the ribbons so as to maintain a regular tension; further, the spools can be readily detached for the purpose of changing the the ribbons. (1) In the arangement shown in Fig. 1, two ribbons are wound on two pairs of spools 4, 5, the spools 5 being provided with pawls 10 engaging teeth 9 on the spools 4. The pawls are arranged so that either pair of spools turns as one when winding on, but during unwinding, the lower spool can turn independently of the upper spool to compensate for the unequal amounts of slack formed in the ribbons by the vibrator. The spools 5 are coupled to the shafts 1 by pins 7 and are formed with journals 8 for the spools 5. The pawls 10 may be replaced by spring pins. In a modification, the spools 4, 5 of each pair are connected by pawls to separate axles geared to turn in the same direction. (2) In the arrangement shown in Figs. 6 and 8, the spools 30, 31 of each pair are mounted on co-axial spindles 32, 33 which are driven independently through a manual - reversal mechanism consisting of pawls 39, 40 carried by a rocking arm 37 actuated by a link 38, the pawls being formed with tails 41, 42 which engage a slide 43 having a recess 44. According to the setting of the slides on opposite sides of the machine, the ribbons may be fed independently in either direction, or may be both silenced. (3) The vibrator is formed with separate slots for the ribbons, and may also be formed with slots to receive an ordinary fullwidth ribbon. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the slots 12, 13 for the ribbons are formed in a plate adapted to be attached by grooves 18 to the ordinary vibrator.
