[Class 40 (iv).] Relates to a holder or support for a telephone hand-set of the kind which can be adjusted to any position convenient to the user and which obviates replacing the hand-set on the usual switch rest on completion of a conversation. According to the invention, the hand-set is carried by an articulated or flexible arm mounted to extend laterally from a vertical tube or spindle and manually or automatically operated means are provided for co-operation with the switch rest. Fig. 1 shows one form of construction in which the desk set is secured by clips 2 to a base 1 on which is mounted a pedestal 3 in which a vertically adjustable tube or spindle 4 is secured by a screw 5. The tube 4 carries a laterally extending arm comprising two sections 7, 8 hinged together at 9, the section 8 carrying a spring clip 10 in which the hand-set is adapted to be held. The section 8 may comprise a length of flexible tubing as shown or may be fitted at its free end with a frictional ball or other universal or swivelling joint or with a short length of flexible tubing. The switch rest is normally held depressed by a pad 15 on a pivoted lever 13 which is connected by a link 12 to a further pivoted lever 11, the free end of which is held down against a spring 21 by a spring-pressed catch member 17 engaging ratchet teeth 18 on the spindle 19 of the finger-piece 16. Figs. 2 and 4 show a modification in which movement of the arm 7, 8 from Fig. 4 position into its position of use causes a cam 25 carried bv sleeve 22 to co-operate with the short arm of a lever 27 pivoted to a fitting 28 on the pedestal 3 so as to allow the pad 30 carried by a resilient extension 29 of lever 27 to rise. Accidental movement of the arm into its position of use is prevented by the engagement of projections 32 on a spring-controlled pivoted catch lever 31 with oppositely disposed series of ratchet teeth on a ring-like member 26 above the cam 25. According to a further modification, Fig. 6, in which the arm is constituted by a length of flexible tubing 8, the switch rest is held depressed by a weight 34 on an arm 35 pivoted at 36 to a fitting 37 adjustably mounted on the pedestal 3. The weight may be lifted by hand and held raised by a spring clip &c. catch or, as shown, it may be raised by a cam lever 39 pivoted at 40 to the arm 35 and co-operating with a projecting part 37a of the fitting 37. The projection 37a also serves as a stop limiting the downward movement of the weight. According to the first Provisional Specification a manually operated switch may be provided in the base member for connecting and disconnecting the hand-set.
