Abstract
396,920. Screw fans. COTE, P., 13, St. Catherine Street, St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada. June 24, 1932, No. 17906. [Class 110 (i).] An electric fan comprises a fan wheel 37, Fig. 6, driven by a motor 35 and mounted on the motor shaft 36, a transmission shaft 38 driven by bevel gearing from the motor shaft, a fan support and motor housing 34 rotatably mounted on a standard 30, a tubular drive shaft 59 rigidly connected to the housing 34 and gearing driven from the shaft 38, mounted within a base housing 28 and controlled by a clutch so that the shaft 59 and housing 34 may be, oscillated or rotated. The housing 28 comprises a switch panel 31 wherein is mounted a tubular plug 65 having a pin-andslot connection with a rotatable spindle 66. The plug 65 carries a knob 67 and a speed-control disc 68 with contact bar 69. The fan speed may be regulated by engagement of the bar 69 with three contact points 70, 71, 72, Fig. 5, leading to resistances. The circuit is made or broken by a push-pull action of the plug 65, contact ring 88 thereon co-operating with a U-shaped clip 74 attached to the point 72 and a spring strip 79 presenting two contacts 80, 81. The bar 69 also engages an arcuate contact 73. Leads connect the strip 79, contact 73, and a power source, through brushes 62, and rings 61 on the shaft 59, with the motor 35. A stub shaft 48, Fig. 10, mounted in a frame 41 drives the shaft 59 by gearing 57, 58, and clutch mechanism is so arranged that the shaft 48 is either oscillated by gearing 96, 97, 98, 50, Fig. 13, or rotated by gearing 46, 47 from a crank shaft 44 driven from the shaft 38. A clutch sleeve 52, Fig. 10, is keyed to the shaft 48 and adapted to slide thereon so as to engage a gear 47 or a collar 49 and crank 60 with pins 116, 117. The clutch is operated by gearing 53, 54, 55 from a resilient rod 101, Fig. 11, having a bent end loosely fitted in a slot in a segmental plate 100 rotatably mounted on the spindle 66 and operated by a cam plate 90 fixed to the spindle. A slidable rod 92 is operated by a V-shaped link 91 attached to the cam plate 90. The rod 92 carries a depending pin 94, Fig. 13, passing through a slot in the lever 97 and about which the lever may oscillate. Extreme counterclockwise rotation of the plug 65 depresses the clutch sleeve 52 but no oscillation of one end of the lever 97 and collar 49 takes place because the pivot pin 94 is adjacent that end of the lever. If the plug is now rotated clockwise, the rod 92 is moved and the pin 94 moves in the slot pivoting the lever 97 nearer its centre so that its free end oscillates the collar 49 and thus the fan support. The amplitude of the oscillation depends on the position of the pin 94 and is regulated by the amount of rotation of the plug 65. Extreme clockwise rotation raises the cam plate 90 and segmental plate 100 and so the clutch sleeve 52 engages the gear 47 and the fan support is rotated. Devices are provided for holding the clutch mechanism in the oscillating or rotating positions, the devices being operated to release the clutch mechanism bv mechanism operated by movement of the rod 92 and cam plate 90.
