Abstract

Aliphatic and aromatic amines are obtained by heating together to a high temperature and under pressure an aliphatic or aromatic compound containing alcoholic or a single phenolic hydroxyl with a salt of ammonium or an aliphatic amine. The products are primary, secondary and tertiary aliphatic, and primary and secondary aromatic amines. According to examples, ammonium chloride reacts, under conditions above described with ethylalcohol to give mono, di- and tri-ethylamine, with m-cresol to give m-toluidine and di-m-tolylamine, with sym-m-xylenol to give sym-m-xylidine and di 3 , 5-xylylamine, and dimethylamine hydrochloride reacts with sym-xylenol to give a mixture of primary and secondary bases.
