Abstract

396,751. Accumulators. LEVY, L. A., 31, Shoot-up Hill, Cricklewood, and ALMEIDA ACCUMULATORS, Ltd., 53, Great Marlborough Street, Regent Street, both in London. Feb. 9, 1932, No. 3879. [Class 53.] An accumulator in which zinc is deposited on charging has positive plates a consisting of graphite surrounded by carbon granules or powder held together in plate form by gelatine, glue, &c. which dissolves in the electrolyte when the cell is assembled. The compressed granules or powder are held in position by a wrapping e of asbestos cloth the ends of which are stuck or stitched together. Stitching is also passed through the graphite plates from one face of the wrapping to the opposite face. The upper ends of the plates are fitted into slots in a carbon block h to which is screwed a metal bar carrving a terminal lug k. Glass strips m of U-shape prevent access of electrolyte to the block h. The bar j and lug k are enclosed in a protective material such as a mixture of bitumen and ozokerite. The negative plates o are also made of graphite and are clamped together against graphite separating blocks q and zinc connecting strips r by means of bolts s. The strips rare connected to a bus-bar t carrying a terminal lug u. The electrolyte contains zinc bromide, zinc chloride, potassium acetate, lithium chloride or bromide and hydrochloric acid. Mercuric chloride may also be added to amalgamate the zinc and instead of the lithium salts the chlorides and bromides of magnesium, sodium and beryllium may be used. Sufficient electrolyte is used to allow of free circulation. Instead of the asbestos wrapping for the positive plates a covering in the form' of a braided tube may be used which may be woven on to the plates. In a modification the positive plates are clamped against carbon blocks w by a bolt, the carbon blocks being clamped to the bus-bar j, Fig. 18, by screws v. U-shaped metal strips z make connection between the bar j and the carbon blocks. Specifications 298,289, 320,916, 321,405, and 324,918, [all in Class 53, Galvanic batteries], are referred to.
