Abstract

320,916. Levy, L. A., and Almeida Accumulators, Ltd. April 27, 1928. Electrolytes; electrodes; amalgamating. - A secondary battery of the kind in which halogens are liberated at the anode during charging, zinc or other metal being deposited on the cathode, is provided with an anode consisting of a conductor embedded in carbonaceous granules contained in a porous envelope, the electrolyte consisting of an acid solution of salts of two or more halogens. Fig. 1 shows a battery in which the anode consists of a carbon rod c surrounded by granules d of graphite, activated carbon or other carbonaceous material contained in an envelope a of asbestos cloth which may be lined with asbestos, filter or nitrated paper. The lower end of the envelope is closed by a wood plug b into which is fitted a glass stem w which fits in an aperture in a celluloid disc x. The upper end of the envelope is spaced from the cylindrical zinc electrode m by a triangular celluloid plate y, and the upper end of the carbon rod c is enclosed in a glass tube h. The envelope is reinforced by wires k of tungsten or other inert metal. The rod c may be provided at intervals with carbon discs and vent tubes may be provided leading from the upper end of the envelope. Fig. 6 shows a modified form of envelope consisting of tape o into which wires n of inert material are woven. The envelope may be of elongated form in cross-section and may enclose a number of carbon rods. The second electrode of the battery may also form the outer container and may consist of galvanized iron kept in an amalgamated condition by means of mercury contained in pockets &c. formed in the electrode. In the battery shown in Fig. 1, the second electrode m is made of zinc and is covered with waterproofed tape or cloth p. The electrode may be made of galvanized iron wire netting as shown in Fig. 10, the twisted portions acting as reservoirs for mercury. A plain netting may also be employed, each wire consisting of two thin wires twisted together, mercury being retained by the twisted wires for amalgamation. The electrolyte consists of a solution of zinc chloride and zinc bromide acidified with hydrochloric acid. Glue, aloes or size may be added to prevent treeing of the deposited metal, and chloride of mercury may be added to assist amalgamation of the cathode.
