Abstract

396,625. Distributers for gravel; road rollers. SCHARS, A. J., 48, Rue Achard, Bordeaux, Gironde, France. Jan. 17, 1933, No. 1543. Convention date, Jan. 25, 1932. [Class 6 (i).] Relates to machines for coating roads with asphalt, tar or the like, and gravel of the kind in which the gravel is coated before reaching the ground. According to the invention, the projection zones 25, 26 of the tar or asphalt and the gravel, respectively, partly overlap so as to provide three successively superposed layers, the first of tar alone, the second of tar and gravel, and the third or upper layer of gravel alone. In the form shown the materials are sprayed in the form of cones from rotary jets 4, 11, driven by an internal-combustion engine 8. The gravel jet 11 is mounted on a chassis and the tar jet is mounted on a frame slidable on the chassis and actuated by a screw 24 so as to vary the distance between the axes of the jets. Tar is delivered to the jet 4 by a pipe 6 leading to a tank 3, the quantity delivered being regulated by a valve 7. The gravel is stored in a vessel 10 having two compartments 10a, 10b, the latter having a sloping base leading to the jet 11. The compartment 10a also has a sloping base terminating in a trough 13 to which the gravel is supplied through a regulating door 12. The vessel 10 is initially charged by closing the door 12 and valve 18 of the jet 11 and by delivering gravel to the trough 13 whence it is conveyed by buckets 14, on an endless chain, to a horizontal endless band 16 which discharges into the compartment 10b. The band is formed with bars 16a which, when the compartment 10b is fully charged, carry the gravel to the storage compartment 10a. When the latter is filled, the valves 7, 18 and the door 12 are opened, the engine 8 is started and the vehicle is propelled along the road. The buckets 14 and band 16 are driven also by the engine 8 and together serve to keep the compartment 10b fully charged. The treated surface is consolidated by rollers 27 carried by an adjustable pivoted arm 32.
