Abstract
396,123. Demonstrating swing of golf &c. clubs. THYNE, D. S., Greenside Lodge, Corstorphine Road, Edinburgh. Feb. 8, 1932. No. 3658. [Classes 132 (ii) and 132 (iii).] Mechanical figures for demonstrating the swing of a golf or like club comprise a grip or wrist-piece 29 of a miniature club 30, a pair of articulated arms each comprising an upper limb 20 and a lower limb 26, and means for controlling the arms so that the club 30 is given the correct swing. The figure is mounted on a base 1, being supported by a plate 7 attached by a clamp 6 to an upright thereon. The plate 7 together with a bracket 9 supports a grooved wheel 8 on a stationary spindle 10 secured to the bracket 9. The spindle 10 alsoserves to carry a collar 11 having a flange 12 to which are secured two supporting rods 13 carrying at their upper ends a disc 14 loosely mounted on the spindle. When the grooved wheel 8 is rotated, which may be done by an electric or spring motor fitted with speed-controlling means or means for controlling the length of the stroke, the collar 11, flange 12, rods 13, and disc 14 rotate about the spindle 10. A coil spring 16 is attached at one end to the collar 11, and at the other end to a notched collar 17 fixed to the spindle 10 by a pin 18, so that the tension of the spring can be suitably adjusted to bring back the arms of the figure to the original position when an intermittent pull of a motor arranged to act on the wheel 8 through a cord 52 is not in operation. The upper limbs 20 of the arms are pivotally mounted on pins 21 to shoulder pieces 19 fixed to the disc 14. At the lower end of each limb 20 a short member 20a is hinged about an axis at right-angles to the pin 21. The short member 20a is connected by a longitudinal pivot pin to a member 24, which is linked with the limb 26 by means of an elbow 25 forming a universal connection. Each arm is controlled by a spring 32 fixed to a projection 35 and slidable through a projection 36 which rotates on an extension 37 of the elbow 25, and by another similar spring connected at one en d to the shoulder piece 19 and at the other en d also sliding through a rotatable projection on the elbow 25, and having a coiled portion. A further spring 34 may be provided for controlling the movements of the lower limb 26. Each upper limb is provided with an extension 43 universally connected at 45 to a back link 46, which is itself universally connected to a block 48 on the plate 7. The upper ends of the links. 46 are connected to the projections 35 on the links 20 by means of springs 49. When the figure is operated, the springs hold the left arm more or less rigid on the back stroke, while on the follow-through swing the right arm remains comparatively rigid and the left arm bends.. The mechanism is preferably enclosed in a dummy.
