Abstract
394,543. Games of skill. GUTHRIE, C. G., Altair, Formby, Lancashire. Oct. 22, 1932, No. 29569. [Class 132 (ii).] Appliances for playing a ball game comprise a captive ball 4, Fig. 7, adapted to receive various directional movements when struck by a club, which movements actuate a miniature golf club 35 in such a manner as to cause a miniature free ball 36 to be projected over a miniature course 37. The captive ball 4, Fig. 1, is mounted on an arm 5 projecting upwardly from a horizontal spindle 7 that is rotatable and slidable within slots 8 in a frame 9 pivoted on a rod 10. A spring 12 normally holds the frame in abutment with cams 19, adjustment of which serves to vary the height of ball above the surface 2. A pair of spring-retracted wires 14 are wound respectively around spools situated at opposite ends of the spindle 7, and communicate through a Bowden wire connection 18, Fig. 7, with the miniature golf club. The captive ball is preferably moulded around a U- shaped support 38, Fig. 6, that is surrounded by a hollow rubber column 39 and is sprung into a slot 40 in the shaft 7 where it is held by washers 42. The washers are spaced apart by a spring hook 43 x pivoted to the rod 10 and serving as a fulcrum for the shaft. The miniature golf club is carried by a mechanical figure, Fig. 3, its shaft being detachably connected to a rod 31 rockable within the head 32 of a spindle 33. The arms of the figure are articulated and attached to the rod 31 bv a pin 30 passing through an eye in the rod. The device is actuated. by the two wires 14 of the Bowden wire connection which pass over pulleys 26 rigid with the upper arms of the figure and are secured to springs 27. The arrangement is such that the club will turn during its downward stroke in the event of the pull on the two wires being unequal, with the result that the ball will be projected in a direction other than straight.
