Abstract
395,855. Moulding pottery &c. MILLER, W. J., 7337, Schoyer Avenue, Swissvale, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. June 8, 1932, No. 16167. [Class 87 (ii).] Moulding pottery &c. A pottery-making machine, Fig. 2, comprises a main frame supporting a mould carrier (such as trays 5f carried on a chain 5), a series of fabricating units mounted on auxiliary frames adjustably located transversely of the machine by such means as dowels, and moulds having similarly adjustable seatings on the trays, each locating device corresponding to a position of a line of production, so that the machine may be used for a number of lines of production varying from the width of the machine divided by that of the largest mould to the width of the machine divided by that of the narrowest mould to be used. The feeding and preforming units are mounted on cross girders A1, the ware being raised into association therewith by chuckmechanism mounted in rectangular frames 4a7, Fig. 3, adjustably secured to cross members 4c of the main frame. The chucks 10 are each operated by a lever 10i pivoted at one end to the spindle 10a and forming a togglejoint at the other with a T-shaped lever 10h pivoted to a link 10e, which is pivoted to one end of a lever 10d pivoted at its other end to its frame 4a7 and having a roller engaging a cam 10b adjustably secured to a shaft 8a journalled on the main frame and driven by a motor 6, Fig. 2, through a shaft 6c and wormgearing 8. The feeding and preforming units, Figs. 10 and 11, are operated through levers &c. from cams on the shaft 9d, Figs. 2 and 3, which is driven by a chain from the shaft 8a. The frame 18 of the preforming unit is located by dowels A3 below the girder A1, and is formed with a bushing 20c, in which works a plunger 20f located in a reciprocating cross-head 9k by clamp bars 9k1 and dowels 9k5. A clay slug C is fed forward by a belt 18c mounted on rollers in a frame 18c2 connected at its rear end by dowels to a main frame member 18c10 and resting with its front end on the frame 18. The belt is fed forward by a lever 14g having a fork engaging a cross-bar 14g1, Fig. 3, reciprocated by a lever 14e operated by a cam 9x on the shaft 9d. The slug advances over the bushing 20c and presses against an upward extension 18e1 thereof, whereupon it is severed by jaws 18e and held until the plunger descends. The jaws 18e are pivoted to the frame 18 at 18f and have lugs 30 and arms 30a which coact with lugs 30c and bevelled parts 30b respectively of a fork 20j reciprocated by a lever 14cl having a fork engaging a cross bar 14c, Fig. 3, reciprocated horizontally by a lever 14a operated by a cam 9w. The plunger 20f has a porous head 20g and compresses the clay between a porous facing 20b and the mould. The facing 20b is secured to a removable plate 29b having a passage through which air pressure is applied behind the facing.
