Abstract

394,647. Direct-injection oil engines ; pistons. LINDEQUIST, S., 8, Landhausstrasse, Wilmersdorf, Berlin. Sept. 24, 1931, No. 26700. Convention date, Sept. 24, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii), 7 (iv), and 7 (vi).] In an oil-engine using spark ignition a whirling motion is imparted to the entering air charge by a plate 10, Figs. 5 and 7, having oblique passages 11 and in which slides the stem of the inlet valve 8 Rotation of the valve 8 changes the direction of the air flow. To assist the whirling protuberances 15 on the piston, Figs. 5 and 6 have a contour which rises gently in the direction of rotation of the air and terminates vertically. Sparking plugs are located behind the protuberances. To provide a correct relative disposition of the sparking plug and the swell on the piston provision is made in the construction shown in Fig. 13 to adjust the upper part 31 of the piston relatively to the lower part. Alternatively, the sparking plug may be adjusted relatively to the piston either (1) by mounting the plug in a carrier which can be displaced along a recess in the cylinder walls ; (2) by mounting the plug in exchangable carriers or (3) by screwing the sparking plug 45, Fig. 18, into a spherical member 47 mounted in the cylinder wall 48 and retained by a nut 49. The plug can be displaced radially by altering the number of packing rings 50. In modified constructions for producing whirling the plate 10 is replaced (1) by guide blades rotatably arranged above the valve seating ; (2) by an auxiliary air inlet 21, Fig. 11, which enters the combustion tangentially and to which heated and compressed air is supplied through a pipe 22 ; (3) by an obliquely set vane secured to the stem of the inlet valve which can be rotated to vary the direction of the inflowing air ; (4) by a curved guide channel rotatably adjustable in the cylinder head ; or (5) by a guide channel 56, Fig. 23, located in the cylinder head 55 and rotatably adjustable by a vane 57 subject to the variations in pressure in the induction pipe.
