Abstract

A process for increasing the puzzolanic activity of natural puzzolanas, and rocks of volcanic origin, e.g. puzzolana, volcano ashes and tufts, basalts, diabases, trachytes, sienites, gabbros, trasses, Santorin earths, gaizes, molers, &c., consists in heating the material to 400-900 DEG C. and then chilling it, e.g. by air, a mixture of air and steam, or a mixture of air and hydrochloric vapour. The treated material may be mixed in powdered or granulated form with lime or Portland cement to form cements, mortars and concretes.
