Abstract
Vitamin A concentrates are obtained by dissolving the initial material in a water-miscible solvent, separating impurities by cooling to a low temperature, then adding successive quantities of water with cooling to precipitate vitamin concentrates, preferably with exclusion of oxygen, and extracting the mother liquor with an organic solvent. In examples (1) the unsaponifiable portion of the liver oil of hippoglossus vulgaris is dissolved in methanol and cooled with solid carbon dioxide in acetone, the precipitate being separated, preferably by filtration through solid carbon dioxide; additions of water are made so as to dilute the methanol to 96 and 90 per cent and then a further 15 per cent of water is added, cooling and separation of precipitated matter being effected as above described after each addition of water, the precipitates being dissolved in petroleum ether and evaporated in vacuo; a fifth product is obtained from the dilute mother liquor by adding more water and extracting with petroleum ether. The third precipitate yields a product of the highest vitamin A content; (2) the unsaponifiable portion of the liver oil of scombresox saurus is dissolved in acetone, and the extraction of concentrates is effected as above described.
