393,838. Determining inclination of lines. MITCHELL, J. S., 539, Dalmarnock Road, Glasgow. Oct. 27, 1932, No. 30101. [Classes 97 (ii) and 97 (iii).] An instrument for determining the inclination of lines relative to the horizontal comprises a casing supporting a spindle on which is freely mounted a cord drum, a hollow guide arm projecting from the spindle through a slot in the casing and having the cord extending therethrough, means on the arm for clamping the cord and the arm, and means outside the casing and operated by pivotal movement of the arm for indicating the inclination at which the cord extends. In the form shown, the drum 10 is freely mounted on the spindle 8 in the casing 6 and the cord 11 is led therefrom through an eye 12 and the hollow arm 13 which is fixed to the spindle 8 and is permitted to rotate therewith by a slot 14 in the casing 6. A nut 22 is adapted to clamp the arm in any desired position and a further nut (not shown) on a split nozzle at the end of arm 13 is adapted to grip the cord when a sufficient length has been withdrawn. The casing 6 is adapted to be set by a weighted pointer or other level on the dial plate 7 and a pointer 17 on the spindle 8 and moving with the arm 13 indicates the angle at which the cord extends on a scale on the plate 7. The drum 10 may be turned to rewind the cord by a knurled periphery 26 projecting through an aperture in the casing.
