Abstract

Artificial threads, tubes, &c. particularly adapted for medicinal or surgical purposes are prepared by spinning an aqueous solution of a polyvinyl alcohol, said solution containing an addition of a substance which promotes evaporation of the water from the solution, e.g. alcohol, or a medicant, e.g. a disinfectant, a substance promoting granulation, a substance having a vasomotor action, an antitoxin, serum, or the like. Especially thick threads may be subdivided into plugs or the like, and tubular products converted into capsules, hollow plugs or pills for containing other medicaments or solutions of medicaments. Fabrics woven from the therapeutically active threads find application as bandages, clothes for the sickroom, and as fabric for placing under settings, e.g. plaster settings. Threads or the like may be coloured to facilitate their observation in the examination of a suture before resorbtion. In an example, (1) polyvinyl alcohol is heated in an autoclave with water and alcohol and extruded under pressure of nitrogen into a current of hot air. In other examples there are added to the solution obtained as above (2) iodoform, and (3) Mowilith Blue.
