[Class 83 (iv).] Embossing.-A body is conveyed towards.a seaming-mechanism comprising a pedestal to receive the body, and is transferred thereto together with an end by an intermittently rotating star-wheel, the body being guided throughout in a rectilinear path. Can bodies 3 are fed between guides 8 by teeth 6 on a feed chain 5, a star-wheel 11 initially moving faster than the chain receiving them in pockets and conveying them to the seaming head 2 while still guided rectilinearly by the extension of a guide 8. Covers 4 are carried in a magazine 9, one being released and fed forward by a reciprocating feed-member 12 actuated by a shaft 14 when a can passes a finger 29. In the absence of a can, the finger yields under the action of a spring 32 to rock a shaft 31, an arm 34, and a rod 28, permitting a pawl 22, carried on a member 18 free to oscillate on shaft 14, to move under the action of a spring 24 out of engagement with a shoulder 20 on a member 19 keyed to shaft 14. The member 18 carries a roller 17 guided in a cam 16 on a shaft 15, and during the normal engagement of pawl 22 and shoulder 20 actuates the feed member 12 first to feed a lid to a marking device 10 and then to the star wheel 11 for transfer to the seaming mechanism. The marking device comprises a lower die 35 and an upper die 36 reciprocated from a cam 37 by an arm 38 and gear segments 40, 41.
