Abstract

A damp-proof, non-rotting and non-swelling protective material, suitable for use for damp-proof courses in buildings, or for similar purposes, such as roofing or floor-covering, is made by embedding glass fibres, glass wool or fibrous glass fabric in a substantially continuous mass of water-resistant fusible material of non-synthetic character, such as bitumen, asphalt, mineral or brown coal tars or pitches, higher paraffins or stearing pitch. The material may be made by applying to a fibrous glass product a small quantity of cementing material, to cause the fibres to adhere, and then impregnating the mass with the water-resistant material. As cementing materials, ethyl-, benzoyl-, acetyl- or vinyl-cellulose, phenolaldehyde resins or, in some cases, sulphite cellulose lye, may be used. Sheets of the protective material may be used in combination with reinforcing materials, such as felt, asbestos or sheet metal.
