Abstract

An insulating substance for electrotechnical purposes is prepared by adding to vulcanized rubber a hydrocarbon which is a cyclic compound modified by the incorporation of a saturated aliphatic side chain, or a mixture of such hydrocarbons. The hydrocarbon is added in the liquid state. The preferred example is retene, and the preferred proportion is 40 per cent by weight of rubber and 60 per cent hydrocarbon. In an example a submarine conductor is coated with rubber in known manner and the coating is vulcanized. The coated conductor is immersed in the liquid or molten hydrocarbon and allowed to remain until 60 per cent of hydrocarbon has been absorbed.
