Abstract

392,978. Engine crank-casings. ARMSTRONG, WHITWORTH, & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., SIR W. G. and TRUTCH, C. J. H., Thames House, Millbank, London. Dec. 1, 1931, No. 33325. [Class 122 (iii).] The crank-casing of a reciprocating engine comprises longitudinal girders of hollow cross section arranged externally and which preferably constitute a part of the wall thereof. The casing may be cast or built up of welded plates. Diaphragm plates 2 support the bearings, and are ribbed for stiffness and perforated to reduce weight. The diaphragm 2 is welded to plates 3, 4 forming walls of the crank-case, and to a base plate 5. Plates 6, 7 are welded to plates 3, 4, 5. The plates 3, 5, 6, 4, 5, 7 form triangular girders. Outwardly extending feet 8, 9 may be provided. The plates 6, 7 may be shaped as indicated in dotted lines. In a modification, the baseplate is bent to have two straight surfaces ; and in another construction, the plates 5, 6, 7 are formed as oppositely disposed arcs of a circle. Triangular girders C, D may be welded to the outside of the crank case to give additional strength.
