Abstract

392,647. Siphon-discharge waterwaste-preventers. HOWSON & SONS, Ltd., G. and HOWSON, R..G., Eastwood Sanitary Works, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Dec. 31, 1931, No. 36121. [Class 26.] In siphon fittings of the piston and cylinder siphoning type for flushing cisterns or the like, the pull on the piston is imparted in a line adjacent the shorter limb of the siphon fitting by the use of a rotatable element carried in a bracket from the head of the siphon without other means of direct connection to the cistern. In the form shown in Fig. 1, in which the entry of water into the tank a is controlled at the inlet c by means of the usual ball tap b actuated by a float d carried at the end of a curved arm d<1>, the siphon fitting g comprises an inverted U-tube having a longer limb g<1> fitted in the bottom of the tank, an upper part g<2> which forms part of the shorter limb g3 and is secured by welding or otherwise to the part g<1>, and a tapering branch h<1> connecting the part g<2> with the cylinder h, of which it forms the lid. A double armed bracket i secured to the part g<2> carries an integral boss i<1> guiding an operating-rod j, which is adapted to slide in a position adjacent a flanged wheel k mounted on the bracket i, causing a chain or other flexible element l passing round the wheel k and connected at one end to the top of the piston rod h<2> to raise the piston n when the rod j, the lower end of which is connected with the other end of the chain l, is depressed. The piston n is formed with a number of holes concentrically provided about the centre thereof, and is covered with a sheet n<1> of metal, vulcanite, or the like. The rod passes at the top through a metal bush a<2> in a plate a<1> covering the tank. In the form shown in Fig. 3, a toothed pinion k<1> engaging a rack h<1> on the upper end of the piston rod and a rack formed on the operating rod j is employed instead of the flanged wheel k. The form shown in Fig. 4 is adapted to flushing cisterns of the high level type, and comprises an operating chain or flexible element l passing over two flanged wheels k<2>, k<3> mounted on double armed brackets i2, i<3> connected together adjustably by a rod o screw-threaded at the ends, the bracket i<3> being provided with a screw-threaded hole for the reception of a pin p adapted to bear on a rubber pad p<1> which is set on the upper edge of the tank a.
