[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Bars 19, particularly for forming half-sections of arches for use in mines, are worked in a machine comprising a roller bending unit 3, a guide 7 for the curved bar, a unit 6 comprising press members 14, 15 for shaping the end of the bar to form the crown of the arch, and a circular saw for cropping the end-piece from the bar in order that the curved bars may mate accurately when assembled. The bending unit may be angularly adjusted and the shaping unit 6 may be diagonally adjusted along slots 2 in the bed-plate 1. The bending rollers are flanged and the roller 11 is mounted in a housing which carries a cover-plate 12 extending over the bar and which may be radially adjusted by an hydraulic ram or by screw gear. The bending rolls are gear driven and may be intergeared. The guide 7 is selected to suit the particular curve to which the bar is bent and is bolted to the curving and shaping units. The bar travels till arrested by a stop 17 whereupon a die 15 is actuated by a fluidpressure cylinder 23 to shape the bar end in conjunction with a fixed die 14. A powerdriven circular saw 5, mounted on the casting 6, is advanced to sever the bar end projecting from the shaping dies. When profiled bars having one flange narrower than the other are employed, horns 20, Fig. 2, are provided on the die 15 to avoid distortion during shaping.
