Abstract

392,017. Treating sewage. LAUGHLIN, W. C., Kew Gardens, Long Island, New York, U.S.A. July 22, 1932, No. 20733. [Classes 46 and 111.] Hydrated gelled cellulose is added to sewage to promote the settlement of solid matter. The gelled cellulose may be obtained by beating waste paper, cardboard, wood or rag pulp, cotton linters, jute, sawdust or other vegetable fibres with water. With the apparatus shown the sewage passes successively through a screen 11, a grit chamber 12, a pump 13, a mixing chamber 16, to which the cellulose is passed from a beater 17, and a settling tank 20. In the settling tank the mixture passes downwards from a launder 15 between baffles 21. Clear liquid rises outside the baffles, passes through filters 28, which may be of sand and include a layer of magnetite, and is discharged by launders 30. The effluent may be chlorinated. The sludge is discharged through outlets 25 and a trough 26 to a vacuum filter 27. Lime may be added to the cellulose and ferric chloride or sulphate to the cellulose, the sewage or to the mixture of sewage with the cellulose. Specification 3252/83, [Class 111, Sewage &c.], is referred to.
