391,494. Packing tin plates ; boxes. SHELL MARKETING CO., Ltd., BISHOP, N., and GARROD, E. R., St. Helen's Court, Great St. Helens, London. Oct. 30, 1931, No. 30122. [Classes 18 and 94 (i).] Tin plates and the like are arranged in shallow box-like containers and are flattened by pressure to remove buckle, the depth of each container being equal to the thickness of a stack of plates when flattened. The container is passed, under pressure, into an outer case which may be as described in Specification 295,642, [Class 94 (i), Packing &c.]. The inner container may be formed from a papier-mÔchÚ blank having a base panel c, Fig. 1, sides b, b<1> and a top cover f. The ends are strengthened by plywood &c. a, a<1> attached by stitching or adhesive, and are made equal in length to the overall width of the container so that the sides b, b<1>, which are similarly strengthened, butt against the ends. Flaps d, d<1> e are also provided. The tin plates are loaded into the container, which is placed on the table of the machine shown in Fig. 4, movable guides 23 assisting the insertion. The flaps f, d, d<1>, e are folded down in that order, and the container is ready for compression and insertion into the outer case. The outer case rests on a tilting table 8 with its open mouth over guiding members 20, 21. The container is forced by a ram 5 over rollers 1 and beneath a weighted roller 19 and between adjustable compression rollers 6, 7 into the case. At the commencement of the movement a stop 4 is lowered and levers are depressed to hold the flap e in position during the insertion, and at the end of the stroke, the table 8 is moved by a lever 10 to discharge the package. The mechanism is automatically declutched at the end of each cycle of operations. In a modified method, the metallic lid d, Fig. 7, of the outer case is forced into position, while compressing the plates and is secured by seaming.
