Abstract

295,642. George, D. March 16, 1927. Packing sheet metal.- Relates to the packing of heavy articles such as tinplates, terne plates, black plates and the like. According to the invention, the end of a 'package comprising a tubular member of sheet metal is closed by a flanged end piece inserted within the end so as to lie in contact with a former on which the tubular member is mounted, or with the contents of the container. The end piece is clamped in this position and the flanges of the tubular member and of the end piece are rolled together by die members moving longitudinally of the tubular member, which itself is prevented from moving by grippers. The package may comprise the sole covering, or may form the inner or outer casing in forms of packing such as are described in Specifications 239,000, 258,304 and 280,625. As shown, a package is formed from a rectangular tube 11, Fig. 1, of tin plate &c., and two end-closing pieces 15, Fig. 2. The tube 11, equal in length to that of the plates to be packed, and allowing for any buffers or packing strips to be enclosed, is formed by seaming at 12. and notches 13 are out at each corner, corresponding notches 16 being formed in upturned flanges 17, 18 of the closing piece. The upper edges of the tube and of the flanges are formed with a slight burr or bevel inwards as shown at 14, 19, Fig. 9. The tube 11 is placed over a former 20, Fig. 3, so that the upper edges project slightly, grippers 21 maintaining it in position. The grippers may be slightly ridged or bossed and the former currespona:ngly indented to increase the grip. An end p.ate 15 is then placed within the tube resting on the former 20 in the relative position shown in Fig. 9. and a closing tool 30 descends to roll over the edges of the tube and the flanges of the end plate, the notches 13, 16 allowing a mitre formation at the corners. The final position is shown in Fig. 10. The surfaces 32 of the closing tool are a sliding fit with the outer surfaces 23 of the grippers, and a spring-pressed plunger 34 holds the end plate 15 in position during the operation of the closing tool. The short end walls are similarly closed. The closing tool rises and the former 20 is rocked about trunnions 26 to facilitate removal of the tube, which may be effected by an ejecting device. The partially formed case is now filled with tin-plates, &c., buffers being added if necessary. The former 20 is removed and the filled case placed in its position with the open end upwards. Rollers and flanges may be provided on the pivoted base member 25 to facilitate moving and positioning the case. A strip of wood &c. is arranged in the open end of the case to prevent the grippers from deforming the end. A closing plate 15 is inserted and the end closed as in the previous operation. The completed case may be enclosed within another similarly made, but preferably of stouter gauge, the wood &c. strip being disposed at the end without protection. In a modification, the former may be horizontally disposed, and the grippers may be actuated by independent means. The base of the former and grippers may be detachable as a unit, to allow for the substitution of others of different sizes.
