Abstract
In distilling oils by batch distillation in a still attached to a condenser, solid deposits are prevented from forming in the condenser by adding to the vapours, before their introduction to the condenser and towards the end of the distillation period, a washing liquid, preferably some of the condensate recovered from the condenser. Oil heated in a still 1 by steam coils 2 is vaporized and the vapours pass up a tower 3 and through a pipe 4 to a condenser 5 provided with a liquid seal 6, the condensate being separated from water in a separator 8 and delivered to a tank 10, from which it is pumped as required through a pipe 13 to mix with the vapours passing through the pipe 4 or through pipes 34, 35. Solvent liquor from <PICT:0391142/III/1> a separate source may be delivered from a tank 39 through pipe 38, while separate tanks 37, 40 are provided for the collection of heavy oil and naphthalene. The condenser 5, Fig. 2, comprises a number of chambers formed by partitions having apertures 15, 17 and is sealed by condensate kept at constant level by the pipe 7. Cooling liquid is circulated from an inlet 24 through pipes 25 to an outlet 21.
