[Class 112.] A rotary take-up device for a hooked needle boot sole sewing machine comprises a thread take-up roll which is mounted on a uniformly rotating shaft and pays off the thread during the stitch formation and pulls it taut subsequently. In one form, Fig. 2, the rolls 27, 41 are mounted on members 23, 31 which rotate at different speeds. The roll 41 slides relative to the member 31 and carries a sleeve 39 embracing an eccentric 29 fixed to the disc 23. Thus the roll 41 moves towards and away from the roll 27 which rotates in a circular path and as the rolls move towards each other and the work, the thread is paid off and while the rolls are moving away from each other and the work, the thread is drawn taut. In another form, Fig. 5, the device comprises a single roll 77 which is mounted eccentrically on a pinion 69 arranged to rotate around an oscillating pinion 63. The combined rotary and oscillating movements of the pinions causes the roll 77 to move towards and away from the work in an obital path and control the thread.
