390,837. Cylinders. EVANS, W. E., 27, Chancery Lane, London.-(Demag Akt.- Ges.; Duisburg, Germany.) Oct. 7, 1931, No. 27884. [Class 7 (ii).] In a gas engine or compresser, the outer cylinder wall d is relieved from tension stress during working by tie bolts h which are external to the cylinder water jacket but pass through annular jackets a<2> surrounding valve openings at each end of the cylinder; the bolts are thus substantially free from expansion due to the rise in temperature of the cooling water. The liner b may be fixed at either end or at the middle as shown ; the wall d is then formed in two parts clamped rogether by nuts on the bolts h or by separate bolts. Cleaning openings f are covered by closure plates g or by a band extending round the cylinder. Joint-making packing.-A water-tight joint between the cylinder wall a and the free end of the liner b comprises an annular groove i<1>, preferably undercut, into which is forced by stages a ring i of malleable iron or copper ; alternatively the tongue j outside the groove may be formed by a forged-iron ring, which is shrunk on to a shoulder formed on the liner. In place of the ring i a metallic hose, subject to hydraulic or air pressure may be inserted.
