[Class 146 (iii).] Intaglio printing-inks are prepared with a binder formed of an alkali solution of resin without the addition of a water-soluble organic solvent, the alkali being present partly as fixed alkali and partly as ammonia. In order to facilitate the retention of the pigments in suspension, colloids such as casein or glue may be added, and a defrothing agent such as an ethereal oil is used. Colophony is preferably used, but other resins such as shellac which yield soluble ammonium compounds or the ammonium compounds of which are peptonized by the alkali resinate present, may be added. The fixed alkali may be caustic soda or caustic potash. According to an example, colophony is dissolved in a mixture of caustic potash and ammonia, and is stirred with water to which a small amount of turpentine oil has been added. Casein may also be added. Pigments are then ground into the mixture. If pastes are used as colouring materials, allowance for the contained water is made during the preparation of the binder.
