[Class 58.] Grain and chaff pass from a thrashing drum a to a reciprocating dressing box e that is provided with a sieve i through which the grain passes, leaving the short straw, and a second sieve k that permits the passage of sand or dust. Any grain thrown with straw from the drum on to straw shakers c falls on to a return plate d which directs it into the box e. The grain passes without the necessity for a conveyer from the box e through a passage m into a second dressing box g rigidly connected to the first box. The passage m is diminished in effective size at or adjacent the place where it is entered by a suction nozzle h through which the remaining short straw and chaff is drawn. The degree of suction may be altered by adjusting the height of the suction nozzle above the floor of the passage. In the second dressing box the grain is subjected to the action of a blast from a blower u provided with nozzles v, the clean grain entering collecting boxes p. In a modification the second dressing box is provided with a collecting chamber from which outlet connections provided with closing flaps are fed. The inclinations of the bottom of the collecting chamber and of the outlet connections are small as the grain is shaken down by the reciprocating movement of the boxes and their associated parts. Sack supporting devices are arranged on the main frame below the outlet ftaps.
