Abstract

389,630. Calculating-machines. MATHYS, A. W., 52, Chancery Lane, London.-(Gardner Co.; 534, Mitchell Street, Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Feb. 6, 1932, No. 3590. [Class 106 (i).] Printing totals.-In a machine such as that described in Specifications 272,569, 293,080, [both in Class 106 (i), Calculating &c.], and 389,632 wherein transfer is of the continuous or " crawl " type, the taking of a negative balance in the form of a complement is accomplished by mechanism operating automatically to convert the complement into a true negative total and then to print this total. In such an operation the machine performs three cycles and printing is automatically prevented until the last cycle. Normal total-taking. By depression of the total key 278, Fig. 5, the latch 620 is rocked to free the total segment 618 for aligning the totalizer pinions and on completion of the aligning the segment will operate through a rod 130 to release the machine for operation. Shaft 206 having been rocked by the key an arm 229 engages a pin 132 on the arm 621 pivoted on the latch 620 and when the segment has risen it will rock this arm 621 to shift the pin from engagement with the arm 229 into contact with a shoulder 133 of a rock-plate 134. During the ensuing operation of the machine this plate will be rocked due to the release of the push-rod 135, Fig. 6, by the cam 318 and shoulder 133 will conseuqently restore the pin 132 to normal position. Negative total-taking. The highest overflow totalizer pinion is provided with a sector 140, Fig. 8, similar to the actuators and normally held inactive by a latch 141, until in total-taking the latch is tripped by a finger 142 on the total segment-driven shaft 607. If the highest pinion stands at nine the sector in moving from eight to nine to take up this reading trips a latch 144 to free a control shaft 146. The latter thereupon rocks under spring action to affect the normal operations of the machine as follows :-(1) The hammer-restoring bail 707 is restrained by a latch 148 to prever t impression. (2) The operating means for the total key latch 223, Fig. 5, is disabled by connections 150, 151 so as to prevent the release of the total key. (3) The latch 141, Fig. 8, is held out of action by a lever 153 to allow the sector to travel to the extremity of its range in taking off the value 9 from the totalizer pinion. (4) The line-spacing of the platen is prevented by arm 156 of lever 153. (5) The continued operation of the machine is ensured by an arm 157, Fig. 9, which liberates a latching pawl 158 on a plate 159. The latter now moves clockwise and places a lug 161 beneath a lug 162 of rod 130 so as to prevent latching of the clutch lever 106, Fig. 3, at the end of the first and second cycles. During the first cycle, the totalizer is thrown into engagement with the actuators to control the advance of the differential bars 615 and these displace pivoted stops 143 to corresponding extents. The stops are then locked by a bail 166 controlled from the plate 159, Fig. 9, through a cam-controlled lever 165. As the plate rocks to the right it carries a pawl 163 against a pin 164 on the lever and the latch 158 being now free from a latch 170 falls upon the arm 157. The operation of lever 165 by the main shaft removes pin 164 from pawl 163 which then moves under the pin and so maintains the lever 165 and therefore the bail in operated position until the end of the forward stroke in the second cycle when a pin 168 engaging a seat 169 restores the pawl 163 and plate 159 to normal position to be held by latch 158 engaging the notch of arm 157. At the end of the second cycle therefore the true negative amount stands in the totalizer and in the third cycle this is taken off and printed in the usual manner. Until the end of the second cycle the total key latch is not tripped by the operation of the shoulder 133 for shaft 171, rigid with plate 159 carries an arm 172 supporting a member 173 interposed between the cam 318 and the rod 135. At the end of the first cycle the shaft rocks clockwise to remove the member from operative position so that the cam is unable to lower the rod until the second cycle when the member is restored. The actuation of the push-rod 135 restores the control shaft 146 to normal position through a pawl 176 and arm 175. Printing special symbols. A sign-printing type-bar is positioned by a pin 612, Fig. 10, engaging steps on a lever 225. , In the case of a negative total the rocking of control shaft 146 positions a lug so that when the shaft is finally restored an arm is shifted to obstruct the pin 612 so as to set the type-bar in the corresponding desired position.
