Abstract
389,184. Steam condensers. ELLOR, J. E., Grandell, South Drive, Chain Lane, Mickleover, Derbyshire. Nov. 17, 1931, Nos. 31856 and 32539. [Class 64 (iii).] In an air-cooled steam condenser of the honeycomb type particularly for an evaporatively-cooled internal-combustion engine for an aircraft and comprising air tubes extending through a casing to which the steam is admitted at or near the base thereof, the steam spaces between the tubes at the front of the condenser are of greater cross-sectional area than those at the back. In Fig. 1, the circular tubes are of tapered cross section and are spaced apart by hexagonal expansions a, a<1>, a<2>, the part a<1> being nearer the front of the condenser than the rear to prevent the tubes from being inserted the wrong way round. In a modification, the tubes are of constant cross section and the hexagonal expansions a, al, a2, Fig. 4, decrease in size from the front to the rear of the condenser. In another arrangement, the hexagonal expansions of the tubes are of constant vertical dimension and of gradually diminishing horizontal dimension from the front to the rear of the condenser. Tubes of the kind described in Specification 166,930, [Class 64 (iii), Surface apparatus &c.], may be used.
