Abstract

389,152. Wrapping-machines. ROSE, A. G. and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd., Albion Works, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. Sept. 16, 1931, No. 25905. [Class 94 (i).] Relates to wrapping-machines of the type having a vertically acting plunger for lifting each of a succession of articles, together with a wrapper, into the folding mechanism. The machine is adapted for dealing with sliced loaves, and means are provided for preventing separation of the slices. According to the invention, the first end folders are moved upwardly out of the path of the second end folders, prior to the folding stroke of the latter. The articles 10 are fed by a band 11 on to a lifting plunger 12, a fixed bracket 13 defining the position. The plunger rises and carries the article, together with a wrapper 14 on the supports 15, 16, between folders 35, 36, a wrapper-retaining device 54 preventing displacement. The folder 35 is pivoted at 37 to a ram 38 and the folder 36 is pivoted at 46 to a bell crank 47, itself pivoted at 48 to a lever 49. Except when engaged by an article, the folders assume the position shown in Fig. 1, lugs 35a, 38a, 36a, 47a limiting the downward movement. The device 54 is pivoted to the lower end of a slide 56 in guides 57. A lug 59 and arm 73 limit downward movement, and the weight of the slide 56 is sufficient to prevent displacement of the wrapper. During the ascent of the article, the sides of the wrapper are folded down by the folders 35, 36, and end supporting plates 74, rising with the plunger 12, hold the constituent slices of the loaf together. End-folders 60, 61, Figs. 1 and 7, with interengaging gears, form the first end-folds. The folders are pivoted at 62, 63 on a frame 64, and are held apart against the action of a spring 128a by links 117, 123, 121, so as to allow room for the plates 74 ; they are then released to fold the wrapper against the ends of the loaf, and the frame 64 rises, carrying the folders and the device 54 with it. The plunger 12 is lowered, leaving the loaf held by the folders 35, 36, and members 33, 34 are moved horizontally to fold the depending portions of the wrapper on the bottom surface of the loaf. The rear end-flaps are folded in by folders 102, pivoted at 104 to a slide 45 and urged inwards by a spring 131. The ram 38, carrying the folder 35, now moves forward and thrusts the loaf to the left, Fig. 1, at the same time the folder 36 is moved backwards and upwards out of the path of the article by the action of the bell crank 47 and lever 49. A resiliently mounted folder 135a turns in the remaining end flap and the final bottom lugs are turned up by a member 137.
