Abstract
389,041. Attaching ends to cans &c. BENNETT, H. W. D., 43, Wish Road, Hove, Sussex. Oct. 25, 1932, No. 29883. [Class 66.] In a sheet-metal container, the joint between the closure member 6 and the container body comprises overlapping joint-surfaces 1, 2, telescopable into one another, one of them 2 being contiguous with one wall 4 of a groove 3, filled with initially plastic, semi-plastic or liquid sealing material 7, and receiving the edge of the joint-surface 1, the two jointsurfaces and the wall 5 of the groove 3 being so formed that when the closure 6 is partly applied the two joint-surfaces are close together or engage around the edge of the joint-surface 2, and diverge from this point, and when the closure 6 is pressed fully home the wall 5 of the groove 3 forces the joint-surface 1 towards the surface 2 thus squeezing the sealing material into the crevice between the two joint-surfaces. The sealing material, which may be that known under the registered trade name of Gold Seal Cap Compound No. 55, hardens on standing or heating. The container may be evacuated, and then after testing the vacuum the joint may be further secured by pressing it by rotating the can between a table 8 and anvil 9 with the joint in contact with a bevelled wheel 10. After evacuation the can may be filled with a preservative gas. The can body may be provided with a rip strip some distance below the end of the can. Instead of the joint-surface 1 being curved, the wall 4 of the groove 3 may slope outwardly from the joint-surface 2. The groove 3 of the joint may be carried on the body member.
