Abstract

Salts such as magnesium sulphate have their water of crystallization extracted, without melting them, by heating in vacuo, using a counterflow of superheated exhaust steam as the drying agent. Steam plate or tubular vacuum drying apparatus may be used. The vacuum may be increased as dehydration progresses, and in this case, if desired, saturated steam may be used as drying agent at a uniform drying temperature. Superheated live steam may be used to complete dehydration and be, if desired, passed into direct contact with the salt.
