Abstract

388,352. Refrigerating. NORMELLI, W. B., 11, Kaiserdamm, Charlottenburg, Berlin. May 14, 1931, No. 14239. Convention date, May 14, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 29.] Absorption machines and systems. - The generator-absorber of a reversing machine, particularly for domestic refrigerators, is cooled by water circulating between the generatorabsorber and a tank in heat transfer with a vessel containing water which may be used for household purposes. The machine comprises a centrally-heated generator-absorber 1 packed with a solid absorbent, e.g. a calcium salt, and disposed in a water tank 3 connected by circulation pipes 14, 15 with a tank 16 surrounded by a condenser coil 5 embedded in a solid, e.g. sodium phosphate, which melts at a temperature of from 40‹ to 60‹ C. and is arranged in a water vessel having a draw-off tap 20 and a porous extension 17 provided with a copper lining 18, and a condensate reservoir 8 having an evaporator coil 10 immersed in a vessel disposed in the refrigerator and containing a solution of glycerine in water which freezes at a temperature of from -5‹ to -10‹ C. and having a recess 19 for an ice tray. The solution is frozen during the evaporation phase of the machine and forms a cold accumulator for use during the generating phase. During normal heating of the generator-absorber the water circulates thermosiphonioally between the vessels 3, 16, but in the event of abnormal heating of the generator-absorber steam generated in the vessel 3 forces the water into the vessel 16 and itself passes to the latter vessel through the loop pipe 15. The water may be circulated between the vessels 3, 16 by pulsometer or other pumps In a modification, two machines are combined to give a continuous refrigerating effect. In this case, a thermostat may be provided in the tank 13 to maintain the temperature of the water below a predetermined maximum. In another arrangement, the machine, which is disposed beneath the heat-insulated storage chamber 38, Fig. 7, of a refrigerator, includes a centrifugal pump 33 driven by an electric motor 34 for circulating the water between the vessels 3, 13 and a fan 35 for forcing a current of cooling air over the coil 32 of the circulation piping. The refrigerator storage chamber is insulated by externally-silvered evacuated glass balls, the space between which is filled with collodium or rubber &c.
