Abstract
388,234. Printing-machines. SCHNELLPRESSENFABRIK AKT.-GES. HEIDELBERG, Heidelberg, Germany. March 31, 1932, No. 9316. Convention date, March 2. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii).] Platen machines ; delivery apparatus ; drying- apparatus.-In a method of automatically delivering the sheets in platen-printing presses by means of grippers rotating in the plane of the platen, each sheet is smoothed on its way from the platen to the pile. The invention is described as an improvement in the delivery of the platen press described in Specification 23358/13, [Class 100 (i), Feeding and delivering webs &c.]. The platen press, shown in plan in the Figure, comprises a frame 1 on which type 1<1> is mounted, and a platen 2 rotatable about an axle 3. Two grippers 4, 4<1>, arranged on the platen 2 and rotatable about an axle 5, are driven intermittently in such a manner that a gripper grips a sheet a, which has previously been lifted by suckers 6 from the feeding pile 7, and during the closing movement of the platen 2 guides the sheet on to the platen surface for printing. After the printing, during the opening movement of the platen, the gripper delivers the sheet to the delivery pile 8. Arranged in the vertical wall of the delivery side in the frame 9 of the type 1<1> are a number of nozzles 10 from which air is blown between the sheet and the type as soon as the gripper moves the sheet at the opening movement of the platen, so that the sheet is smoothed and peeled from the type 1<1>. A fixed support 11 of the press frame 1 carries a rotatably mounted compressed-air distributer 12 provided with a U-shaped tube 13 having downwardly directed nozzles, and a rotatable tube 14 provided with an oblique tube 15 having nozzles which direct air in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the sheet coming from the platen. Below the tube 15 there is arranged on the support of the pile 8 a polished guiding-sheet 16 over which the sheets pass and on which they are pressed by the air streams from the tube 15 to smooth out any irregularities. Each sheet is thus guided smoothly up to the pile 8 where it is pressed against the other sheets of the pile by the downwardly directed air streams from the tube 13. The air streams which effect smoothing also accelerate the drying of the print. The compressed air is controlled so that it acts on the sheet on the commencement of withdrawal of the latter. Instead of using the tube 15 the sheets may be passed between guiding walls, brush surfaces, or the like, and where guiding walls are used the upper one may be provided with compressed-air nozzles which direct air on the sheets to keep them on the lower surface to avoid smudging the print.
